What is bluegrass? 09/02/2007
I was thinkin about a post I saw on a myspace bluegrass forum from someone asking for recommends for beginning to collect bluegrass CDs. Some people recommended CDs by bands that are not what I'd call bluegrass. Someone replied alot of what passes for bluegrass these days is folk with a banjo. I think that's true. There's nothing wrong with adding banjo, or mando or fiddle to folk music, but that does not make it bluegrass. There's a tightly scripted feel, even to the slower numbers that is distinctive. It's not just an all acoustic sound there's a drive and a feel that is uniquely bluegrass. If you listen to enough of the real thing you know what that means, if not then you'll still believe folk with a banjo is bluegrass.
